The arrival of two injured birds to the Corporation’s mini zoo at VOC park once again stressed the need for an animal/bird rescue centre in the city.

On Friday, Mohammed Saleem of Environment Conservation Group and N.I. Jalaludeen of Nature Conservation Society received a call from Siruthuli about an injured Black Kite (Milvus migrans). The wings of the bird were found to be completely cut off. After first aid, it was sent to the Corporation Zoo.

From Ganapathy area, a peacock with leg injury was also brought to the zoo, where it was administered first aid.

Mr.Saleem said that a city like Coimbatore, which is very close to Western Ghats with higher chances of wild and winged visitors, did not have a rescue/rehabilitation centre for birds and animals. He exhorted the NGOs and authorities to come together to have one such facility.
