Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam members in Coimbatore recently conducted an awareness rally in villages along the Kerala border to highlight the issue of waste from that State being dumped in these villages. Led by V. Eswaran, district secretary, Pondruchamy, the party's farmers' wing leader, and others the MDMK cadres told the villagers that dumping of wastes polluted their agricultural lands and also water bodies.

Those who transported the wastes duped the farmers saying that the wastes were fertilisers or manure.

This activity had been going for the past 10 years.

Mr. Eswaran said that the Tamil Nadu Government should initiate action under the prevention of pollution act against those who transported the wastes and also against those who facilitated such transfers.

He said that MDMK would intensify the campaign in Anamalai, Veetaikaranpudur, Odayakulam, Kizhavanpudur, Diwansapudur, Valanthayamaram, Manakadavu and neighbouring areas.
