In an effort to put an end to ragging and create awareness among students and also faculty and managements, the Coimbatore Rural Police on Tuesday conducted a programme with students’, faculty’s and managements’ representatives.
The police sources said that Superintendent of Police, Coimbatore Rural, E.S. Uma spoke at the meeting that saw the participation of representatives from 95 institutions. This included arts and science colleges, engineering colleges and also the Coimbatore Law College.
She said that second and third year students should not harass first year students but only welcome them for higher education. The students should realise that they had a role to play in the development of the society and act accordingly.
Life was not confined to education. It required right attitude, understanding and humane approach. Students in their late teens or early 20s should realise that there was every chance that they could fall for things that were of temporary nature.
They should value their parents’ and faculty’s suggestions.
Ms. Uma appealed to the students to welcome the freshers and treat them in a positive manner so that a healthy relationship bloomed between the juniors and seniors. She also told them about the provisions of the law, how education institutions had been asked to form anti-ragging committees and how stringently the police viewed ragging complaints.
Deputy Superintendents of Police Shanmugam, Murugasamy and Palanisamy and other police officers were present.
