Leaders of the DMDK - People’s Welfare Alliance - TMC coalition were at the Coimbatore City Police Commissionerate on Saturday to lodge a complaint against an AIADMK councillor of the Coimbatore Corporation for attempting to bribe voters and a police officer for abetting the crime.
Led by R. Tamil Murugan, urban district secretary, Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam, members from the CPI-M and other parties, the leaders said that when their alliance leaders led by candidate P. Murugan went to Gokulam Colony in P.N. Pudur on Marudamalai Road on Friday night on a tip-off that money was being distributed to voters, they found an Assistant Commissioner of Police with a few people at the spot. The officer had abused Mr. Murugan and chased away the coalition cadre.
On information, when Kavundampalayam Assmbly constituency candidate V. Ramamoorthy and a few others joined them, the officer meted out the same treatment to them, Mr. Tamil Murugan said and added that the officer’s action led to the suspicion that the police were biased towards the ruling AIADMK.
The Coimbatore City Police and the district administration should stay neutral, stop money distribution, arrest those who distributed money and also act against those who aided the bribing of voters.
The coalition leaders also sought the transfer of the Assistant Commissioner of Police and disciplinary action against him for rude behaviour.
Former Member of Parliament, Coimbatore, P.R. Natarajan said that the leaders submitted the petition to the District Collector as well.
