As part of plans to give a facelift to the airport in view of the World Classical Tamil Conference starting here from June 23, Airport Authority of India has taken up expansion and modification of terminal building to accommodate 350 persons each for arrival and departures.
Since many delegates both domestic and international are expected to arrive for the conference, a new arrival hall has been constructed with three conveyor belts, with loop length of 60 metres each, escalator and elevators, space for VIP room, a duty free shop and adequate number of toilets, including for physically challenged, an AAI press release said today.
The facelift, with assistance of Tamil Nadu PWD, was being done at a cost of Rs. 85 crore, it said, adding the arrival hall would be operationalised and put into use from June 21.
Stating that AAI has requisitioned 613 acres to construct an Integrated Terminal building to handle 1,200 passengers, at a cost of Rs. 250 crore, AAI said the State government has agreed to hand over the land soon.
