Abudahir (33), a life term convict in the Madurai jailer Jayaprakash murder case and a convict in the Coimbatore serial blasts case, was admitted to a private hospital for treatment. Abudahir, serving trial period and sentence for the last 15 years, was suffering from systemic lupus erythematosus for the last five years. The disease has led to malfunctioning of his kidneys and cardiac related ailments, sources said.

When his health condition started deteriorating, Muslim outfits made a plea for his release. To examine the representation, a medical board was constituted. When his plea for parole and release was turned down, the convict filed an appeal before the Madras High Court. High Court ordered for his release on parole from September 30, 2012 and issued a direction to the State Home Secretary. The State had gone on an appeal and the High Court had dismissed the appeal on September 14, 2012. Hence, seeking parole and immediate release of the ailing convict, the federation of Muslim outfits staged a demonstration on Huzur Road in the City on Friday.

Following an order by the Madras High Court on December 3, while disposing a petition, the prison officials shifted Abudahir with full police escort to a private hospital in the city. According to sources, he is undergoing dialysis.
