AIADMK wave in Tirupur

It turned out to be an ‘AIADMK wave' in the local body elections in the district as the party registered facile victories in the polls held to the key posts in various civic bodies.

The party candidates won 14 of the 16 town panchayat chairmen posts and three of the chairpersons in four municipalities to which the elections were held besides winning the Mayor election in Tirupur Corporation.

The election to the post of Chairman in Vellakoil Municipality was deferred following the death of the DMK candidate a few days before the polling date.

The AIADMK candidates who got elected as municipal chairpersons were S. Shobana in Udumalpet, N. Kalavathi in Dharapuram and G. Manimaran in Kangeyam.

Ms. Shobana won the election by a margin of 4,203 votes over DMK's K. Chithiraiselvi. The winner polled 12,791 out of the 29,747 votes cast in the elections.

Ms. Kalavathi got better of K. Sumathi of DMK by 1,543 votes. She obtained 12,918 out of the total 29,140 votes polled.

G. Manimaran won in Kangeyam by securing 8,655 out of the 17,812 votes polled while second placed S. Subramanaim of DMK got just 3,703 votes. In Palladam Municipality, DMDK candidate P.A. Sekar succeeded in turning the tables by beating the AIADMK candidate S. Thangavel by a margin of 47 votes.

It was a photo finish for Mr. Sekar as he whopped 5,557 votes of the 17,988 votes polled while Mr. Subramaniam finished with 5,510 votes.

Following is the list of AIADMK candidates who the elections to the posts of town panchayat chairmen with the name of town panchayat given inside the brackets.

R. Jagathamabal (Avinashi); K. Bhoopathi (Samalapuram); K.V.Subramaniam (Uthukuli); C. Latha (Thirumuruganpoondi); P. Ramesh (Kannivadi); T. Indumathi (Kulathupalayam); K. Duraiarasan (Madathukulam); S. Manimeghalai (Mulanur); Devi (Kaniyur); K.R.Sivakumar (Komaralingam); M. Selvanayaki (Muthur); Nattudurai (Chinnakkampalayam); Deiyvanayaki (Dhali) and R. Ramuthai (Sankaramanallur).

Of them, Nattudurai got elected unanimously from Chinnakkampalayam.

The other candidates who got elected to town panchayat chairmen posts were C. Umamaheswari of DMK in Kunnathur and P. Mohanraj (Independent) at Rudravathi.
