An 80-year-old man who had come to the Coimbatore Collectorate on Monday to submit a petition during the public grievances redress meeting fainted while having his petition numbered. Rengasamy, a resident of Chokkampatti here, was immediately administered first aid by the Emergency Management Technicians of the GVK EMRI ‘108’ ambulance stationed at the Collectorate. He was later admitted to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital.

Arms licence

The Indu Makkal Katchi (Tamil Nadu) has asked the State Government to grant arms licence to leaders of various Hindu organisations in the wake of “repeated attacks on Hindu leaders across the State.”

A delegation lead by its district president V.V. Manickam submitted a petition to the district administration during the public grievances redress meeting held at the Collectorate on Monday.

The petition cited the recent murder of S. Vellaiyappan, Tamil Nadu State Secretary of the Hindu Munnani, in Vellore, the hurling of a petrol bomb at the residential apartment complex of the Katchi’s founder-president Arjun Sampath, and other attacks on Hindu leaders in The Nilgiris and Coimbatore, as reasons in support of the demand.

Land conversion

Coimbatore-based Social Awareness Movement has asked the district administration to prevent large scale conversion of farm land into sites for housing projects without adhering to norms.

In a petition to the submitted to District Collector M. Karunagaran the organisation’s founder president J.D. Socrates said that authorities must record the complaints against such land conversion and take action against any officials found conniving with those behind such attempts.

‘Retain wall’

V.K.V. Sri Nagar Colony Residents Welfare Association has asked the district administration to restrain the Perur Town Panchayat from demolishing a portion of a wall constructed around a temple to construct an overhead tank.

In a petition to the submitted to the District Collector, G. Krishnaraj, secretary of the association, said that there was plenty of land available in the Town Panchayat. There were two overhead tanks in nearby villages, of which only one was operational.

The local body had already constructed a library in 45 cents allotted for a children’s park. A temple was constructed in this land in 1997 and a compound wall was erected around it.

The remaining land should be used only for a children’s park, the petition said.
