Many graduates who possess a degree are not employable. Nobody is going to hire them for they cannot be productive in any business, Additional Director General of Police, Chennai, C. Sylendra Babu, said here on Saturday.

Skills

Delivering the graduation day address at the Nehru Institute of Technology, he said if graduates had an ambition and wanted to accomplish something significant, they must improve their skills – of writing, speaking, organising and dealing with people.

“Knowledge of people is as much important as knowledge of subject. If you understand human behaviour you can gain mastery over the art of managing people. Otherwise you might end up as an unemployed graduate,” Mr. Babu said.

Defence

“There is a paradox in this country. There are millions of unemployed graduates while at the same time there are millions of jobs lying vacant. In the Defence, nearly 20,000 posts of officers are vacant. It is because there are not adequate candidates with required qualification. While we need five lakh chartered accountants, we will be able to produce only 50,000 in the next five year,” he added.

There was also a need for scientists for research and development, technicians in the production industry, and skilled medical professionals.

P. Krishna Das, Managing Trustee, and P. Krishna Kumar, Chief Executive Officer and Secretary, Nehru Group of Institutions, were present.
