Conceding the long-pending demand, State Government on Wednesday ordered the sanction of an additional Traffic Investigation Wing (TIW) unit for Coimbatore City Police.

At present, the 15 police stations spread over four sub-divisions has only one TIW unit for dealing with road accidents.

The unit had its sub-divisions at Central, East and West and was all of them were headed by one Inspector. One unit for 15 police stations was found to be a laborious exercise. Personnel had to travel the length and breadth of the city for investigations at the accident spot. This resulted in time loss for motorists whose vehicles were involved in the accident.

In its proposal, the Office of the DGP cited a number of reasons for seeking an additional TIW unit. The City Police during the Chief Minister’s conference early this year represented for one more unit.

The Chief Minister announced the sanction on the last day of the conference and a Government Order to that effect has been issued now.

The existing TIW unit will be named as TIW East and will be located at B 6 Peelamedu Crime Police Station premises on Hudco Colony and the new unit will be named TIW West and will be located at Gandhipuram.

The units will have one Inspector, six sub-inspectors, eight head constables and 22 grade II constables each.

Meanwhile, the City Police are planning to revive their proposal/plea for sanctioning traffic police stations for seven stations.

At present, Saravanampatty, Selvapuram, Sai Baba Colony, Ukkadam, Podanur, Kuniamuthur and Rathinapuri police stations do not have a sanctioned traffic police section.

Personnel are sent from other stations and units for ‘duty’ resulting in the personnel being overstretched.

Similarly, of the 15 police stations, Saravanampatty and Rathinapuri do not have police units for dealing with crime.

Now, the City Police are planning to revive their proposal for the traffic and crime wings for all the police stations.
