Activists studying biodiversity near Singanallur tank on Wednesday prevented illegal dumping of foundry waste.

The activists, who did not want to be identified, said that by Wednesday late afternoon, they found a lorry dumping foundry waste. On inquiry with the lorry driver, they learnt that the vehicle had carried the waste from a foundry in the area and had been dumping waste on the Singanallur tank bund for a few days. Soon thereafter the lorry owner also arrived at the spot. The activists said that they had to explain the ecological sensitivity of the area, narrating how many plant, bird and animal species were present and how the dumping would spoil those. Later, the owner and driver removed the waste dumped over the few days.

The activists said that the Corporation should erect barricade on the southern side of the tank as well to restrict entry of vehicles. The civic body had erected a barricade near the Trichy Road, they pointed out. Corporation officials were unavailable for comment.
