Residents of Oothupalayam village in Arasur Panchayat of Sulur taluk on Monday thronged the District Collectorate to present a petition seeking action against a private foundry causing pollution in the area.

The petition said the unit was dumping chemicals, oil, and polluted sand into a well and in open places. This has resulted in polluting the groundwater making it unfit even for irrigation.

Besides, the unit was indulging in noise pollution and air pollution, the petition said. The villagers wanted the officials to stop the functioning of the foundry.

Not getting water

Farmers irrigating about 165.90 acres along the Vettaikaranpudur canal and Periyapodu distribution canal in a petition said that they were not getting sufficient water to irrigate their land.

Bad roads

State organising secretary of Lok Satta Party, S. Easwaran, submitted a memorandum to the District Collector seeking review of the road works carried out on Lawley Road up to Karupparayan Koil, and on Thadagam Road up to Vedapatti Road.

The condition of these stretches had become bad within a few months of laying.

The contractor should be asked to re-lay the roads at his expense.

The party demanded that whenever such works were taken up, the details of the project including, cost, contractor’s name, officials concerned should be displayed at the site.

Protest

Members of a federation seeking justice in the Ammasi murder case on Monday submitted a petition asking officials to invoke the provisions of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act of 1989 against the accused in the case — E.T. Rajavel, a lawyer, and Mohana, his wife. The federation said that invoking section 302 of IPC against the accused was inadequate.

More facilities sought

Members of various social organisations, and political parties on Monday presented a petition to the District Collector seeking immediate measures to improve the facilities at the Pollachi District Headquarters Hospital.

The petition said that the hospital that began functioning in 1934 was upgraded to District Headquarters Hospital in 2010. People from Negamam, Kinathukkadavu, Pollachi, Valparai, and Udumalpet frequent the hospital.

The hospital lacks space and infrastructure. The petition said that 2.75 acres belonging to the Balagopala puram primary school, and Government girls’ high school should be used to provide more facilities.
