A borewell near Ketti sunk by the town panchayat to supply water to the residents nearby is posing a threat to people, as it has not been closed properly after the work on it was abandoned.

Locals living between Ketti Palada and Kekatty Hada said that the borewell was sunk a month ago near a stream, which was one of the main sources of water to Kattery Dam. But as soon as the rains started, landslips occurred in the area and it became clear to the panchayat officials that the spot was unsuitable for sinking borewell.

The plans were abandoned and the pipes that were lowered to a depth of more than 50-feet were retrieved and the work was abandoned.

M. Paramasivam, a local from the area, said that the borewell has not been properly covered with sand and any weight exerted on the surface would make it sink. “Many children play nearby, and the borewell is right by the side of the road. Steps should be taken to close the borewell,” he said. The area residents also said that heavy rain would make the area dangerous and people who walk by the side of the road could be at a risk of suffering serious injuries if the borewell was not closed properly.
