The Airports Authority of India (AAI) will construct toilets in government girls schools in the State under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives.
This followed the call given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his maiden Independence Day address to ensure that all government schools had separate toilets for girls within an year.
The spending should be from MP Local Area Development funds, budgets of the State Governments, and the CSR activities of the corporate sector.
D. Paul Manickam, Director of Coimbatore International Airport, told The Hindu here on Wednesday that the AAI had allocated Rs. 20 crore for this nationwide project.
The AAI would maintain these toilets for a period of two years.
In Coimbatore district, 15 government girls schools have been identified with the help of State Department of School Education. The project cost had been estimated at Rs. 20 lakh, he said.
A. Gnanagowri, Chief Educational Officer, Coimbatore, said that the schools identified included five primary schools.
The AAI personnel will soon visit these schools to ascertain the requirements following which tenders would be called for.
The construction works will commence by January, and were likely to be completed by March.
AAI sources said that 75 government schools have been identified in Tamil Nadu. Besides the 15 at Coimbatore, an equal number have been identified at Tiruchi, and Salem, another 25 at Madurai, and five at Tuticorin.
