While most education institutions mark ‘Thiruvalluvar Day’ (January 16) by organising competitions in essay writing and poetry, a school in Karamadai, near here, chose to pay homage to the great poet by creating his portrait using earthen pots.
Students of the SVGV Matriculation Higher Secondary School came up with a 133-feet-long portrait of Thiruvalluvar using 3,990 pots, each of which had a couplet of ‘Thirukkural’ inscribed on them.
A total of 1,330 students, the same number as the total number of couplets in ‘Thirukkural,’ took part in this initiative with each of them inscribing a couplet on three pots. Going beyond just helping the students to fluently write this literary masterpiece, the school has taught them the meaning behind these timeless verses.
Intense practice over the last seven months, organisers said, helped the students bring down the time taken from five hours to just 40 minutes on Wednesday, when this attempt to set a record of sorts was undertaken. Certificates were given to all the students who took part in it.
Elite World Records, U.K.; Asian Records Academy, Singapore; India Records Academy, Mumbai; and Tamilan Book of Records, Chennai gave certificates after recording the attempt. Senthil Group of Companies managing director O. Arumugasamy, was the chief guest.
