The last three days of June this year will be in the memories of around 500 former cadets of Sainik School, Amaaravathinagar, for long, as they assembled on the sprawling premises of their alma mater for a memorable reunion for the 49th Alumni Association meeting of ‘Amaravians’.

The occasion also gained more prominence for the 50 cadets from 1988 batch of the total people present, as it was the Silver Jubilee year of their reunion. As a tribute to their two fellow classmates (Balamurugan and Natarajan) who died after passing out from the school, the 1988 batch people dedicated a multi-purpose hall during the reunion to the school.

The hall was opened by the parents of the two departed cadets. The facility will be used for formal gatherings.

Colonel A. Sridhar, who is serving in the Army, and E. Gowthaman, a government official in Orissa, who passed out from the school in 1988, remembered the days they spent with Balamurugan and Natarajan.

Many of the cadets who studied in the school since it was set up in 1962, have gone on to serve the Armed Forces, civil services like IAS, IPS, and in various other private sector fields.

Prominent among them were Air Marshal S. Varthaman, Major General D. Rajan, Air Commodore R.H.Karve, Major Sreeram Kumar who was recently awarded Ashok Chakra.

Teachers honoured

This year’s meet also had something special.

The alumni felicitated five of the teachers who were there in the Sainik School in its year of inception in 1962.

The teachers, Sheela Cherian, M. V. Somasundaram, M. Selvaraj, P.Rathinasamy and P. Gurumurthy, were presented with memorabilia.

With cultural programmes, the reunion meet came to a close. Captain Sandeep Chakravarthi, the principal of the school, and Wing Commander P. Ravikumar, the headmaster of the school, coordinated the events.
