Residents of Arya Nagar, Meenakshi Nagar, and 12 other residential localities near Ondipudur were at the Coimbatore Collectorate on Monday asking the administration to reverse a Coimbatore Corporation decision to build a railway underpass.
They said that the Coimbatore Corporation Council had recently passed a resolution to construct a railway underpass in the area where the State Government had already sanctioned Rs. 27.60 crore for a bridge.
It was quite unfortunate that the civic body took the decision to build an underpass without taking into confidence the 3,000 people residing in the area, the petition said.
With the work on the underpass about to start, the residents were worried as it would lead to water stagnation, traffic congestion, and several other problems.
During monsoon, the place where the underpass works was about to start would have more than three feet water.
And, this would force the residents to walk more than 3km to reach the bus stop.
The residents were apprehensive that the underpass would become unsafe for women to use it after dusk.
Community certificatesResidents of Kopaneri hamlet, near Anaikatti, have sought community certificates to help their children continue education.
In a petition, the villagers said that community certificates were crucial to the continuance of their children’s education. A few of those had stopped going to school because they did not have the certificate.
In the absence of community certificates, the residents were unable to become beneficiaries of several government schemes.
They told the Collector that there were several self-help group members in the village, who were mostly into cattle rearing.
If the administration were to help them by giving goat it would help them grow economically.
They wanted the government high school upgraded to a higher secondary school, and a bus service introduced from their hamlet to Anaikatti.
