A group of 16 tourists from Vellore, on a trip to five districts across the State to express their support for jallikattu, staged a protest at the Doddabetta Peak in Udhagamandalam on Sunday to bring awareness about the issue among tourists. The men, most of whom are working in the healthcare sector, had come to the Nilgiris on Sunday. They raised slogans in support of the bull-taming sport and against animal rights groups.
M. Raja Babu, who was one of the protesters, said that they had decided to stage the protest at Doddabetta to bring awareness among tourists over the ban on jallikattu.
“We will visit at least five districts and continue to protest till the ban is overturned,” said G. Senthil, another protester.
Students from the Government Arts College continued their protests for the third consecutive day at the ATC Bus Stand in Udhagamandam on Sunday. Apart from raising slogans, they also garlanded bottles of soft drinks and staged an “oppari porattam,” mocking the “demise” of international brands, which they said youngsters across the State have begun to boycott.
Sporadic protests by various groups were also reported from other parts of the Nilgiris.
