The renovated Children’s Traffic Park of the city police on PRS Ground premises on Dr. Balasundaram Road was inaugurated on Wednesday.

Technically supported by Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India Pvt. Ltd., the traffic park is first of its kind renovated by the company in Tamil Nadu and biggest one in south India.

Speaking at the event, Police Commissioner A. Amalraj said that traffic awareness given at the park will transform children to good drivers in the future.

“The year 2016 saw 1,377 accidents and 285 people were killed. Murder cases claimed lives 27 people in the same period. Only safe driving practices can bring down fatality on roads,” said Mr. Amalraj.

Police have made tie-ups with Education Department and associations of private schools to train students at the park.

Officials said that the traffic park is equipped to give traffic awareness classes to over 200 students per day.

Yadvinder Singh Guleria, Senior Vice President-Sales and Marketing of Honda Motorcycle and Scooter, said the company has a dedicated team of 30 people for road safety awareness and the next park will be set up in Thane. Existing since 1962, the one-acre facility saw major renovation works after Honda decided to set up its 11th children's traffic park in the country here.

Apart from a mini traffic track with all signals and traffic signs, the park has LED projectors, traffic simulator, watch tower, mini amphitheatre and a hall to conduct awareness classes.

Safety riding instructors trained and appointed by Honda will assist the visitors.
