New building for Coimbatore museum soon

The Coimbatore District Museum at Nehru Stadium and the archaeological site museum on Nanjundapuram Road are likely to move out to a new and bigger premises soon, according to a proposal under consideration by the State Government.

Official sources said that a museum building would be developed at a total cost of Rs. 2 crore in the city.

The district museum here is now located on a 4,000 sq.ft space and has on display 520 objects. It has totally 1,258 pieces. The archaeological site museum has over 300 objects from different parts of the State and is now located on a 2,000 sq.ft premises.

About 50 cents is required for the new building. The land has been identified on Addis Street and is waiting for approval by the State Government. The plan is to have two floors, so that heavy exhibits can be displayed in the ground floor and the rest on the first floor, the sources said.

The sources added that the shifting of archaeological site museum was yet to be finalised.

“The district museum did not have its own building so far. With own building, there will be annual fund allocation and several educational activities can be taken up,” the sources said. The objects will get better display too.

According to Ravi Sam, former chairman of Confederation of Indian Industry, Coimbatore, a new museum is one of the long-pending demands of the city. It should be located in a place with easy accessibility and enough parking area. It should be interactive and have infrastructure for talks and programmes so that youth find it interesting.
