Rohtas Singh Dhaka, a resident of Kannampalayam, on Monday sought the intervention of District Collector with Ministry of External Affairs to trace his son, a merchant navy third officer, who went missing during sail to Canada.
The petition said that Mr. Dhaka’s son Karthik Chaudry is missing since October 19, 2016, according to officials of Anglo Eastern Ship Management where he had been working since 2009. According to Mr. Dhaka, the family received a call from Mr. Chaudry on October 19 which ended abruptly.
“Officials with the company are saying that my brother went missing on October 19. A few days ago, we got a call from the company asking if we had applied for his death certificate. Though they claim that he is missing since October, I received his call from Canada on December 12. We believe that he is alive and we suspect some foul play by the company,” said R. Meenakshi, elder sister of Mr. Chaudry.
Residents seek patta
A group of women along with their children from Venmani Nagar, near Mettupalayam, staged a protest in front of Collectorate on Monday seeking patta for around 100 families. The protesters marched to the Collectorate with mat and bed stating that they would remain on the premises until patta is assured.
“Around 100 families have been residing at 4.22 acre of panchami land coming under Pellathi village, near Mettupalayam. We are deprived of electricity as patta is required for a new connection. Around 60 children, who are going to school, are using kerosene lamps for studying. The colony also lacks other basic amenities such as road, water, and toilets,” said S. Chithra, who led the protest.
Demand
Members of All India Dalit Sena Agitating Committee for SC, ST, OBC, and Minorities on Monday staged a demonstration in front of the Collectorate urging authorities to ban low quality packaged food items that lack labels on date of manufacture, expiry date, and ingredients. They demanded that the District Collector and officials of Food Safety and Standards Authority of India take action against manufacturers of such products.
Probe sought
A petition signed by 20 graduates and scholars of Bharathiar University was submitted to the District Collector alleging foul play in some of the appointments made for the post of assistant professor at the university.
The group of petitioners, who had earlier submitted a petition on the same issue, alleged that the appointments were made on preferential basis violating various norms that had to be followed. They also sought an investigation into alleged corruption involved in the appointments.
‘Return money’
