Government school teachers stage a protest outside the Elementary Education Officer’s office in Coimbatore on Saturday

Members of the Joint Action Council of Teachers’ Organisation on Saturday held a protest outside of the District Elementary Education Officer’s office to press various demands. They said that they were concerned about the District Elementary Education Officer intimidating teachers during his inspection at schools.

They wanted the State Government to initiate action against him for violating rules in printing question papers in the last three years. In April 2016, instead of printing question papers for students of primary and middle schools, the officer had used question paper that was already out in the open and available at photocopy shops.

The officer had turned his ire on teachers’ association office bearers when they questioned the delay in the release of incentive for 80 teachers and sought action against the Assistant Elementary Education officer of Sulur Panchayat Union. The amount due to the teachers was ₹80 lakh.

They alleged that the District Elementary Education Officer had been harassing assistant elementary education officers for the past two years by sending them on inspection to panchayat unions other than theirs and preventing them from carrying out their regular work.

In short, the officer’s actions were against the interest of students and the education community as a whole, they alleged and sought action against him.
