BJP State president Tamilisai Soundararajan has sought a memorial for those who died in the February 14, 1998 bomb blasts in the city.

Addressing party men and cadre of other Hindu organisations on the 19th anniversary of the blasts in R.S. Puram on Tuesday, she said the memorial had been a long-pending demand of Hindu organisations.

The State government was yet to find those responsible for the murder of Hindu Munnani leader C. Sasikumar. She alleged that the police were going soft on extremists from other religions and giving special treatment to them as minorities.

The BJP was gaining strength in Tamil Nadu, much against the wishes of many political leaders, she claimed and said it would soon emerge as a formidable force.

Senior BJP leaders S.R. Seghar, Vanathi Srinivasan, G.K.S. Selvakumar, Hindu Munnani State president Kadeswara Subramanian, RSS leaders and other members of other affiliate organisations participated. More than 1,000 persons courted arrest.

In the morning, members of the Indhu Makkal Katchi-Tamilagam led by Arjun Sampath took out a procession and paid homage to victims on Sir Shanmugam Road.
