As of Sunday 5 p.m., the district administration officials had received 90 ‘Form 6’ applications from as many people for enrolment in the voters’ list. The administration as per the directions of the Election Commission of India had conducted the drive in 14 polling booths in the district to provide one more opportunity to people who were yet to enrol in the voters’ list.

The administration said that it conducted the special drive because in the last drive conducted on March 9, 2014, no new voter had submitted application form. Or, in other words, the number of ‘Form 6’ applications received at those polling booths was zero. The reasons for zero new applications were varied, the administration sources said and pointed out that in a Press Colony polling booth that catered to only residents of the Government press resided, there could have been no new residents.

The officials in charge of the election machinery would scrutinise the 90 applications along with those received on March 9. They had received 30,000 in the last drive.

Of those, at least 10 to 15 per cent were liable for rejection as the documentary proofs for residence were not furnished or were not genuine. In very few cases, the details entered were incorrect, the officials said. Once the scrutiny was over, the officials would enter the names in the voters’ list and then initiate process to give the electoral photo identity cards.
