A 70-year-old Peepal tree was transplanted from the Government Hospital at Pollachi on Sunday to make way for a comprehensive emergency trauma and orthopaedic care centre.
According to Hospital sources, the decision to remove the tree was taken during a patient welfare society meeting chaired by District Collector Archana Patnaik on December 12. The Pollachi Municipality came forward to transplant it
The local body roped in Surabhi, an Erode-based non-governmental organisation, for the purpose. A team from the NGO began works last month, when it commenced trimming the roots and branches. It also administered chemical treatment to nurture the tree.
Following this, the team on Sunday used cranes and earth movers to remove the tree. It was mounted on a truck and taken to a Municipality park at Jothi Nagar in Pollachi where it was transplanted.
