As many as 64 Government schools in the rural areas of the district will soon be getting RO (reverse osmosis) plants to ensure provision of purified drinking water to students.
District Panchayat chairman M. Shanmugam told this to reporters recently.
“We have earmarked a total financial outlay of Rs. 3.2 crore for setting up the RO plants as well as for erecting energy saving street lamps in the rural blocks across the district,” he said.
Mr. Shanmugam said that each Reverse Osmosis plant planned would have the capacity to treat 250 litres of water in a batch.
“Providing clean drinking water will help prevent spreading of pathogenic micro organisms that are usually transmitted through contaminated water,” he added. The chairman said that a total of 1,600 fluorescent street lamps would be replaced with Light Emitting Diode (LED) lamps so as to enhance the efficiency and lifespan of the lamps.
He also hinted at the plan of sinking around 20 more borewells in rural areas. The administration had decided to hand over a few stretches of rural roads to the control of State Highways Department.
