Forty five Periyar Dravida Kazhakam activists were arrested on Friday for trying to stage a rail roko at Mettupalayam station in protest against non operation of more trains between Coimbatore and Mettupalayam.

PDK General Secratary K. Ramakrishnan, who led the demonstration, alleged that the Railway Ministry had shown no interest in conceding the long-felt demand of commuters for more trains.

Only one train operates between the two stations at present.

The PDK agitation was to draw the Centre’s attention to the ’negligence” shown to the demands of regular passengers who solely depend on trains, as it is a cheaper mode of transport, he said.
