The Coimbatore Corporation Council on Thursday passed a resolution to urge the State Government to create two more deputy commissioners’ posts.
The civic body said that two posts — deputy commissioner (works) and deputy commissioner (health) be created as the work load had increased with the expansion of the Corporation area from 105.60 sq.km. to 257.04 sq.km.
The increase in area had led to a situation with the present deputy commissioner was tasked with looking after works in progress in engineering and town planning wing, school buildings, hospitals, bus stands, wedding halls, community halls, markets, commercial buildings, parks and playgrounds, vehicle parking, sewage treatment plants, officers’ quarters, bus termini, burial grounds, abattoirs, and much more.
Likewise, the work in the health wing had also increased as the job involved managing 20 urban health centres, 11 allopathy centres, two Siddha hospitals, three Ayurveda clinics, implementing the SJSRY scheme, maintaining birth and death registers and issuing certificates, engaging workers on contract and outsourcing the maintenance work in toilets.
To expedite the works in progress and ensure quality of works, the civic body required two more deputy commissioners, the Council said and also informed the Government if the posts were to be created the salary outgo from the civic body’s coffers would still be within 49 per cent of the total revenue.
