The 10th edition of Coimbatore Vizha, to be held from January 5 to 12, is expected to be a larger event with activities planned across the city.

Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner K. Vijayakarthikeyan launched the Coimbatore Vizha mascot (Chippy) and Kovai Pattu and the vizha on social media on Friday.

“Since this is the 10th edition, we want to make it bigger and inclusive. Today (November 24) being Coimbatore Day and the Victoria Town Hall being an iconic structure, we had the launch on the Corporation premises,” said S. Prasanna Krishna, chair of Young Indians (Yi), Coimbatore.

This edition, apart from the 150 regular events, will have some new programmes.

A double decker bus from Mumbai will be in the city throughout the Coimbatore Vizha week.

Groups of 50 members will go on different scheduled routes to see the old buildings, temples, etc. This will be free of cost and all through the day for the seven days.

An open air theatre would be set up and movies for all age groups will be screened in the evenings.

Vizha streets

Seven main streets of Coimbatore have been identified and these will be decorated as “vizha streets”.

A music fest with performances of different genres and a mass cleaning programme throughout the city are some of the other highlights.

At the “Ovia Sandhai”, about 100 artists will display their works.

“Taste of Coimbatore”, a food festival, will be held from January 5 to 7. There will be mall-specific activities in all the three shopping malls in the city.

Any institution or organisation that wants to be a part of the vizha can contact the Yi. The detailed programme schedule will be shared by the end of December, he said.
