300 cars will be accommodated on the 5-metre-wide strip
A parking lot for 300 cars on Link Road, near the busy Spencer junction on Anna Salai, will become operational in the next few weeks. The Chennai Corporation will soon appoint a private agency to operate and maintain the facility.
“The Corporation's revenue department has been asked to identify the private agency and the parking lot will be put to use shortly,” said an official of the civic body.
The parking facility on Link Road, which connects Binny Road with Dams Road, was initially planned for 500 cars. The first phase of the work, however, covers only a portion of the stretch and would have space for parking around 300 cars.
Signboards
The civic body would soon erect signboards near the facility to help motorists make optimum use of the parking space.
The parking lot has been built with capital fund of the Chennai Corporation on a 5-metre-wide strip of land measuring 715 metre in length on Link Road, along the Cooum river.
Construction debris generated in Triplicane zone was being dumped in the land. The land was handed over by the Public Works Department to the civic body.
Second phase
The second phase of the parking lot is unlikely to be taken up immediately as the PWD is yet to hand over the remaining stretch of land on the same road occupied by 140 slum households after rehabilitating the dwellers.
A total of 140 houses for alternative accommodation have already been readied by the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board for them.
Tokens have been issued to residents eligible for alternative accommodation.

Comments:
Good News!. Its not clear whether it is paid parking or not?. It is one of the avenues to generate revenue for the government. They should have clear Slots / Marking (Which I dont see in the picture) to park the vehicle which will help us utilize the space effectively.
