Brahma frontrunner for Election Commissioner

August 19, 2010 01:50 am | Updated 01:50 am IST - NEW DELHI

Retired IAS officer of the 1975 batch from Andhra Pradesh cadre Harishankar Brahma (60) seems to be the frontrunner for the post of Election Commissioner, which fell vacant after the elevation of S.Y. Quraishi as the Chief Election Commissioner last month.

Mr. Brahma, belonging to Gosaigaon of Kokrajhar district of Assam, retired as Union Power Secretary on April 30. Earlier, he served as the Special Secretary in the National Disaster Management Authority.

Informed sources said the formal notification appointing him as the Election Commissioner was likely to be issued soon. If he takes charge, he could hold office till April 18, 2015.

The other Election Commissioner, V.S. Sampath, interestingly, also belongs to the 1975 batch IAS from the Andhra Pradesh cadre and held the post of Power Secretary before joining the Election Commission.
