Bharatiya Janata Party on Wednesday played down the court verdict in the 2002 Naroda Patiya riots case in Gujarat, saying the party respects the judicial system and abides by it unlike Congress, which has a culture of challenging court orders.
“We have full trust in the judicial system...To question the judicial verdict on the streets is a culture of the Congress and not of the BJP,” party spokesperson Tarun Vijay said here.
BJP MLA and former minister in the Narendra Modi government Maya Kodnani and Bajrang Dal leader Babu Bajrangi were among 32 people convicted by a special court today in the 2002 Naroda Patiya riots case in which 97 people belonging to the minority community were killed.
Additional principal judge Jyotsna Yagnik held Kodnani and Babu Bajrangi guilty under sections 120 (B) (criminal conspiracy) and 302 (murder) of IPC in the post-Godhra riots case, while acquitting 29 others.
The massacre had taken place a day after the Godhra train burning incident of February 27, 2002.

this headlines clearly shows the true colors of media in india, instead
of appraising the BJP which is accepting the verdict and always believes
in Constitution unlike the congress and its supporters who all are
'pimps'.
The BJP, does not have an option, but to try & down play the verdict. Just imagine,
had the two said convicts been released by the same court, what would the BJP
reactions have been? From it being a victory for Mr. N. Modi to every possible
positive spin possible.
The party needs to seriously introspect its descent into being a clone of the
Congress (which is mired in nepotism & corruption. Devoid of ideas at this stage),
when the nation could have done with a responsible opposition which would have
reassured the electorate of a welcome alternative. The sad reality is that BJP, is
unable to rise to the occasion. Every action or reaction is painted with the fig-leaf
that is, "that the congress also did it....." Is this really, the party with a difference?
Please stand up and be counted for a change. The Congress needs to be voted out
of power, but is BJP, really the solution, am not sure. At this point, with 2014
approaching, I am a regular voter is undecided!
I wish BJP was a party for every Indian.
Can BJP truely and honestly say that people from all section of Indian communities, irrespective of religion, culture and caste, support it?
We need to establish beleif in our judicial system. It does not matter how seriously wrong someone is done he/she must resort the system rather than conquering the street.
Mobs never bring stability which BJP has been doing.
Leave fair trial.. At least Gujarat govt gave trial to victims of 2002
riots. What about congress, whose famous 1984 govt of Mr Rajiv Gandhi
caused the massacre of 3500 Sikhs on Delhi's street and NOT a single
bullet was fired whereas more than 300 killed during police firing in
Gujarat riots. Compare how many convicted in '02 riots and NOT a single
person has been convicted in Anti Sikh riots.
So its quite fair to drag other party's name who is mainly responsible
for the biggest smear campaign against any individual.
Who has gone most times on the street is well known to the people, well if one feels injustice has been done one always appeal against the judgement, but dragging other party name into it is not the right thing, BJP has also failed to provide feeling of justice by protecting Modi & not allowing the Godhra case to be give a fair trial outside Gujrat but one can not tell lies for ever.
