Multi-organ failure of CPI-M leader Jyoti Basu has set in after he suffered acute renal failure today, his personal physician Dr A. K. Maity said.
“His condition is very critical and unstable,” Maity told reporters.
The 95-year-old CPI-M leader, who underwent a two-hour dialysis last night, was again put through the process for the second time, Maity, who is on the medical board, said.
The dialysis would continue for three hours, he said adding “We have to monitor how he receives it“.
He said Basu’s heart was unable to pump blood properly. “Some new medicines have been given.”
A medical bulletin issued by D N Agarwal, executive director of AMRI hospital, said Basu’s oxygen requirement was also high.
There was, however, no further deterioration in his cardiac condition since yesterday and Ryles tube feed was being continued.
The doctors of the medical board were constantly monitoring his condition.
T. S. Kukrejja, executive vicepresident of the hospital, said the tracheotomy, which was planned on Basu, has been deferred.
CPI-M state secretary Biman Bose, Industry minister Nirupam Sen, Land Reforms minister Abdur Rezzak Mollah, Urban Development minister Ashok Bhattacharya and former Lok Sabha speaker Somnath Chatterjee visited the hospital.
Large mobilisation of police personnnel was made around the hospital at Salt Lake.
