The motorcade of Barmer BJP candidate Sonaram Chaudhary was attacked when he was campaigning in Shiv area in the district, with party members alleging that supporters of expelled leader Jaswant Singh were behind it.
Mr. Sonaram said the attack took place when he was visiting Shiv area on Thursday with his supporters for soliciting votes.
The windscreens of two vehicles in his convoy broke in the attack.
Though no complaint has been filed with the police so far, “we have identified some of the persons involved in the attack last evening,” SP, Barmer, Hemant Sharma said on Friday.
Former BJP MLA Jalamsingh Ravlot, who was accompanying Mr. Sonaram, alleged that supporters of independent candidate Jaswant Singh were behind the attack.
“I will give a complaint against eight identified persons. The attack was executed at the behest of a rival candidate,” Mr. Sonaram said, without naming Jaswant Singh.
The SP said that appropriate action against those involved in the crime will be taken once the complaint is filed.
76-year-old Jaswant Singh, a former Union Minister, decided to contest the Lok Sabha elections as an independent after the BJP fielded former Congress MLA Sonaram Chaudhary from the Barmer seat.
