New German FM wants 'Europe united' to counter 'America 1st'

Germany’s new Foreign Minister says that Europe’s response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s “America First” strategy should be “Europe United.” In his first major policy speech since taking office, Heiko Maas said the European Union should strive for a “balanced partnership” with the United States. Mr. Maas says this means working with Washington where possible, filling voids in areas where the U.S. is withdrawing and pushing back where America is seen as crossing red lines.

The fight between the Delhi government and the Lt. Governor over IAS officers’ “strike” intensified on Wednesday with thousands of AAP leaders and workers marching to the L-G’s office where Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his Cabinet colleagues had been staging a sit-in since Monday evening. During the protest march, party leaders and workers raised slogans against the Lieutenant Governor - “ L-G sahab, Delhi Chodo (LG, quit Delhi)”. In view of the protest march, police made appropriate security arrangements.

BJP leaders and rebel AAP legislator Kapil Mishra on Wednesday sat on a dharna at Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s office against the “non-performance” of his government, mimicking a protest the ruling dispensation members are holding at the lt governor’s office. Leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly Vijender Gupta and MLA Manjinder Singh Sirsa said the sit-in will continue till their demands are met by the AAP government. The protest is against the “non-performance” of the Kejriwal government, Mr. Gupta said.

For the third day, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and three members of his Cabinet are staying put in the visitors’ room at Lieutenant-Governor Anil Baijal’s residence. The Chief Minister demanded that the L-G intervene to end what the Aam Aadmi Party dispensation termed was a four-month-long strike by bureaucrats in the wake of the alleged attack on Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash by AAP MLAs in February.
