At least eight militants were killed and 12 others injured in army raids in Egypt's volatile North Sinai over the past 24 hours, the military said on Wednesday.

The raids targeted militants headquarters and shelters in the south of Sheikh Zwayed city in North Sinai.

The military said that 10 others were arrested during the raids.

Egypt’s Sinai has witnessed many violent attacks by militants since the January, 2011 revolution that toppled ex-president Hosni Mubarak.

The attacks targeting police and military increased after the ouster of Islamist ex-president Mohamed Morsi in 2013.

Over 500 security personnel have been reported killed since then.

Last month, at least 32 people were killed and dozens others injured in simultaneous attacks that hit Al-Arish city in North Sinai.

The military has launched security campaigns in the area, arrested suspects and demolished houses that belong to terrorists, including those facilitating tunnels leading to the Gaza Strip.
