French President Emmanuel Macron issued a call to Europeans on Tuesday not to retreat into nationalism but to build the European Union as a bulwark for liberal democracy against a disorderly and dangerous world. Addressing the European Parliament in the French city of Strasbourg, the 40-year-old head of state won a standing ovation from most lawmakers after condemning the rise of “illiberal democracies” even within the EU. Myanmar grants amnesty to 8,000 prisoners
Myanmar’s new President said on Tuesday over 8,000 prisoners will be freed in an amnesty, a move the government said would bring about humanitarian support amid the country’s political reforms after decades of military rule.
The presidential pardon, signed by newly-elected President Win Myint, said the move was aimed to bring peace as part of celebrations of the Myanmar new year. It did not specify when the amnesty would take place. - Reuters
Modi in Stockholm
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday arrived in Sweden capital Stockholm in the first bilateral visit by an Indian Premier to the Nordic nation in 30 years. Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven received him at the airport.
Mr. Modi is on the first leg of a five-day foreign tour, which will take him to the United Kingdom, where he will attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.
