A flight of steps to fun

Chill out zone Students seem to be having a jolly good time at their hangout

What’s to love:

The unconditional and unprejudiced relationship between students and teachers, perhaps, best defines the jovial ambience. Located at a distance of 10 kms from Perumbavoor and some 40 kms away from Kochi, Sree Sankara Vidyapeetom College, over the years, has been able to impart education to the underprivileged sections of the region.

The Sree Sankara Vidyapeetom College is owned and managed by Sree Sankara Trust (SST) and the motto of the college is ‘Tamaso Ma Jyotir Gamaya’ (Lead Me From Darkness to Light).

Founded in 1967 as a junior college with a few hundred students, this institution is the first one started by the Trust. Today, SST owns three colleges and a school across the state.

This college was accredited by the NAAC at the ‘B’ level in 2007 and is affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University. The college boasts of around 1,000 students and offers nine undergraduate programmes in arts, science and commerce and four at the post-graduate courses in History, Commerce, Biochemistry and Biotechnology.

A recent study undertaken by the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) constituted in the college has revealed that 86 per cent students of the college hail from financially weaker sections of the society. And thus, most students engage themselves in some kind of part-time job. And to effectively address this concern that the college has instituted around 20 scholarships and endowments, with the support of well wishers, for those who achieve excellence in curricular and non-curricular activities.

However, lack of economic freedom do not desist the students from enjoying campus life. The activities of a number of forums like the National Service Scheme (NSS), Cine Club, Blood Donation Club, Chess Club etc. truly embody their youthful spirit.

The activities of the Arts Club is reflected in the college magazine that they publish regularly. The campus also has its own football and cricket teams. The computerised library is a favourite hangout for the knowledge-hungry. A women’s hostel within the campus is fast nearing completion.

What’s not to:

Since both the students and faculty members share a wonderful relationship, one can hardly feel any kind of invisible fences in the campus. Instead, there is a visible understanding and cordiality all around, within and beyond the classrooms.

Alternatives:

Being very spacious (it’s spread over more than 30 acres), the Sree Sankara Vidyapeetom campus is studded with umpteen numbers of comfy student hideouts. The ‘steps’ apart, which is definitely the cynosure of all eyes; several other campus hangouts have become popular according to the tastes and preferences of the students.

However, the canteen, the open corridor tucked between the library and the ladies’ rest room (better known as lover’s corner!), health club and student’s corner above the canteen, the badminton court, flag post and a garden in front of the college are the unmistakable chartbusters.
