Toon for a cause

Nickelodeon’s play-a-thon saw kids abandoning their TVs for outdoor play

Outdoor fun Children at the play-a-thon

It’s probably every child – or parent’s – dream. Pack up your schoolbooks, turn off that television set, toss aside your Wii and Playstations and go out and play! That this message comes from a television channel might seem a little incongruous, but that doesn’t take anything away from the overall sentiment.

Kids’ channel Nickelodeon came to Hyderabad recently as a part of their ‘Let’s Just Play’ campaign, a movement that aims at including what they call ‘active play’ into the lifestyle of children.

November 7 saw a series of events designed around the overall theme of ‘Let’s Just Play’ which took place across several cities. The morning had students of 12-13 schools congregating for a Sports Day of sorts, being segregated into four zones and put through games like three-legged football. The afternoon took the play-a-thon forward with a carnival of different games for kids, including the ever-popular Twister, bowling, 3-Team Football and playing with hula hoops. Nicktoon Ninja Hattori was also in attendance, resplendent in conventional blue and yellow gear.

This is the second year that ‘Let’s Just Play’ comes to India, and the first time the initiative bounces into Hyderabad. The irony of a television channel propagating non-TV viewing is still not lost, but it’s good to see social awareness programmes coming from the unlikeliest mediums.
