The green campus

What’s to love: The students of Kerala Institute of Travel and Tourism Studies (KITTS), Thycaud, have a long list of pet names for their campus. ‘Green house,’ ‘heritage hub,’ ‘nature friendly campus’ ‘pollution-free zone’… are but some. But whatever be the name, the students all agree that KITTS is a green paradise with its grass beds, well-pruned garden, thickets of bushes and lush canopies.

“Can you find such a nature-rich campus in the heart of the city elsewhere?” asks Rohini Varma. Her friend Rimi Venugopal says: “Though located in the heart of the city, it is quiet and pollution-free.”

An ardent fan of nature, Rohini enjoys spending her afternoons by the lawn that is located at the right of the campus entrance. “The trees give us adequate shade and the lush lawn is a great place to sit and chat.” A half-wall that surrounds the lawn is also a reason why students gather at the spot. “It is a great spot to click photographs. The half-wall that is in the background adds charm to the pictures. It is also quiet there,” adds Rohini.

Rimi, however, feels the balcony near the old library is the place to chill during free hours. “One can get a clear view of the Government Guest House next door. It is fun to spot VIPs who visit the guest house.” For Sreejith K. who has a weakness for coffee, Coffee Corner, which is located behind the main building, is where he heads to when he feels like having a cup. “There is a coffee vending machine there. I usually go there during my free hours to grab a coffee or lemon tea. It is also an ice-breaking zone as seniors and juniors gather there.”

While Jyotsna Sivan chooses the wooden ‘mandapan’ near the garden as her favourite place, especially when it comes to having a party or a get-together, Adarsh Mathew prefers the library that is located near the reception. He says: “It offers many cosy spots to steal 40 winks. Also it is more comfortable to hangout there while chitchatting with juniors.”

What’s not to love: Though it is hard for Sreejith to find anything negative about his campus, Adarsh finds the stray dogs that roam around the campus a nuisance.

Alternative: “We love hanging out so, whenever we get a couple of free hours we go to various places in the city,” says Jyotsna.
