My Five -- Navneet Jeevan

Gary Jules

Mad World

A track made originally by the British band Tears for Fears, it hit No. 3 on the U.K. Singles Chart in November 1982. Two decades later, the song made a popular resurgence when it was covered in a much slower, ballad-like style by composer Gary Jules, reaching No. 1 in the U.K. in December 2003. A song about the hardship and emotional strain of a person who is just “going through the motions” in life. It’s about how we all just seem to be living lives that aren’t particularly interesting and how it is really hard to feel unique at all.

Bob Marley

Buffalo Soldier

Possibly Marley’s best known song, and one of the easiest songs to sing-along to. This song is special because of the simplicity of the beat, the relaxed mood, and the talent of Marley’s band, The Wailers. The track is also a powerful message against racism. The lyrics tell the story of a buffalo soldier, the name given to black soldiers in the days of slavery in America, who were used as ‘cannon fodder’. Combines powerful lyrics, depth and musical talent.

Coldplay

The Scientist

The second single from Coldplay’s second album, A Rush of Blood to the Head. The song is built around a piano ballad, with lyrics about a man’s desire to love and an apology. Sample the lyrics, “I was just guessing, numbers and figures, pulling the puzzles apart” and “Questions of science do not speak as loud as the heart”, telling us that logic cannot be applied to everything. The way Chris Martin plays the piano and sings this song is breathtaking.

Linkin Park

New Divide

A song by American rock band Linkin Park, released as a single and recorded specifically for Michael Bay’s film “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.” Linkin Park said they wrote the song based on some of the movie scenes from the Transformers. And if you have watched the movie you know it fits perfectly. The lyrics are consistent with the movie’s action and the images are extremely powerful.

Katatonia

I Am Nothing

This song is from the fourth full-length album Tonight’s Decision by the Swedish band Katatonia, released in 1999 by Peaceville Records. The lyrics in many of their songs are far from just writing down thoughts or emotions. This song serves as a message to those who have friends that are depressed, calling on them to lend a helping hand.

Those that almost made it

Metallica: Nothing Else Matters

Def Leppard: Two Steps Behind

Limp Bizkit: Take A Look Around

Madonna: Die Another Day

Johnny Cash: Cat’s In The Cradle
