The MMA choir performs Handel’s Oratorio “Israel in Egypt” on November 8
|
Since its inception in 1893, the Madras Musical Association choir has been performing more of George Frideric Handel’s (February 23, 1685 – 14 April, 1759) compositions than those of any other composer. The MMA has performed Handel’s “Messiah” with the famous Hallelujah chorus many times over. The other works of Handel performed by the MMA are “Judas Maccabaeus”, “Solomon”, “Samson” and “Israel in Egypt”.
Since it is the 250th death anniversary of Handel this year, the MMA dedicates all its choral concerts to the composer’s memory and will include at least a few of his works in its concerts. Earlier this year, the MMA choir performed at three fund-raisers — in aid of a school in Kashmir, in aid of the Little Sisters of the Poor and the CSI Kalyani Hospital. In all these concerts, excerpts from “Judas Maccabaeus”, “Messiah” and “Israel in Egypt” were sung.
In a finale dedicated to the memory of the maestro, the MMA choir will perform the full Oratorio “Israel in Egypt” (for 2 choirs with orchestra) for the first time in its history. The choir will perform with the members of the Madras Chamber Orchestra at the Chinmaya Heritage Auditorium in Chetpet on November 8, 7 p.m.
Parking facilities have been arranged at the Madras Christian College School. Donor passes, priced at Rs. 1,000, Rs. 500 and Rs. 300, are available at Musee Musical, Mount Road, Pro Musicals, Egmore, and with members of the choir. For more information, call 93819 11977, 98412 24542 and 98842 94648.
