Harley-Davidson rumbles in

The superbike to commence sales in 2010

Legendary US-based motorcycle maker Harley-Davidson is officially in India, with plans to commence bike sales in 2010. Harley-Davidson Motor Company president and chief operating officer, Matthew Levatich, was in Delhi to speak at the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers’ annual convention two moths ago.

The iconic motorcycle maker’s immediate approach will be to directly import a line-up of heavyweight motorcycles from its existing range. A made for India — small-capacity Harley — model is not initially planned. Harley’s Indian foray will not restrict itself to just selling motorcycles but also offer the chance to get familiar with the complete Harley-Davidson experience, which includes genuine H-D biking accessories and merchandise. Levatich feels this is the perfect time to enter India, for Harley-Davidson can now see the Government making significant investments towards the construction of superior roads, infrastructure and highways that are critical factors to support such premium motorcycles.

Harley-Davidson India will commence operations spearheaded by managing director Anoop Prakash from a subsidiary located in Gurgaon. According to Anoop, the company is already in the process of headhunting for its initial set of dealers across Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Hyderabad as well as Punjab. Key to this company’s success in the Indian market is going to be its ability to price the bikes competitively. Along with its awesome reputation, Harleys fit in here as a niche segment of heavyweight cruisers, within an already niche market for superbikes.
