TART ATTACK Chef Sheikh Dawood displaying his delicacies at Cafe n Cakes, Velan Food Park

Hidden away in a street corner on Rajaji Street at Ram Nagar, Café n Cakes (CnC), at Velan Food Park, is a delight. In operation for around a month, the café plans to go full steam by Independence Day. They serve a large variety of bakery items like pastries, cakes, tarts, brownies, pies, snacks, cookies and breads.

The Blueberry pastry is a creamy wonder that melts in your mouth. It has generous layers of cream mildly flavoured with the berry. To let the guilt sink in there’s an extra dollop of flavoured cream on top, with a thin dribble of chocolate sauce.

Also check out their truffle cake, made up of three different kinds of chocolate. Pastries are priced at Rs. 45.

The crowning glory of the café, however, is their Tiramisu custard. Coffee connoisseurs will love this piece of Italian magic. Chef Sheikh Dawood crafts it with egg yolks, mascarpone, and condensed milk, cream and coffee sponge. Garnished with a sprinkling of instant coffee and priced at Rs. 70, this is a must try.

CnC has an impressive repertoire of breads, which apart from the regular sandwich bread include whole-meal, oatmeal and garlic. Also for sale are baguettes, croissants and bread rolls. CnC also bakes breads to order like tomato-cheese, onion-cheese and spinach breads to name a few. The café has spaghetti, lasagna and other Italian and Mexican dishes for lunch and dinner. Wash it down with their mocktails. They recommend the blue ocean (a litchi, blue curacao and ice cream blend) and the blue lagoon. Try the Kiwi shake, if you have a fetish for sugar, or stick with the regular mojito. Mocktails are priced at Rs. 55. CnC makes cakes to order. All they need is 24 hours notice. Give us a picture and we’ll bake it, they say.

Try out their tarts. You will be spoiled for choice. They have chocolate, papaya, litchi, strawberry, cashew, chicken and mushroom, to name a few. Their cookies, starting at Rs. 200 a kilo (40 pieces) are perfect. Available in butter, masala, almond and cashew flavours. The Danish pastry is a personal favourite. Fresh, warm and buttery; it wraps a jam of your choice in it. This 45 bucker is a great companion to your tea or coffee.

Do save space for the brownies. Try out their piping hot dark chocolate, white, walnut and California brownies with Snowman ice creams. Popular ice-cream flavours are the alphonso mango, litchi-pineapple and fig-honey. Brownies and ice-cream will cost you Rs. 125. This high-calorie heaven is a treat to the senses.
