A festival of Russian films portrayed love in the time of war

To celebrate the 64th anniversary of the Victory over Fascism in the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945), a week-long Russian Film Festival themed as “Memory of the Great War” was jointly organised by the Russian Centre of Science and Culture (RCSC) and Film Trust India recently. It was inaugurated by filmmaker Muzaffar Ali.

In this five-day festival five Russian films were shown, followed by discussions. The films were Destiny of a Man (1959), and They Fought for Their Motherland (1975), directed by S Bondarchuk, Torpedo Bombers (1983) directed by S. Aranovich The Star (2002) directed by N Lebedev. The festival started with Ballad of a Soldier (1959) directed by Grigori Chuhrai, which recounts, within the context of the turmoil of war, various kinds of love: romantic love, the committed love of a married couple, and a mother’s love for her child. The film produced at Mosfilm won several awards, including the BAFTA Award for Best Film and was nominated for the Academy Award for Original Screenplay.
