Traditional New designs mixed with the old
The delicate romance of Bengal cottons is back with ‘Rang Mahal’, a sale of Bengali saris from the weavers of Nadia district, at Bharat Hotel (BTH), till July 19. With changing times, traditional Bengali weavers too have incorporated newe
r styles, keeping their unique touch intact. That’s what makes this sale special. Dacca cotton kotas with Shantiniketan block prints (Rs.500-700) are in beautiful colours. Casual cottons with contrast blouses (500-600) that make perfect daily dressing wear are in an eye-catching range. Ikat, Shantiniketan in traditional Jamdani weaves fuse together a textile lineage to modern twist into graceful saris, all in natural tones. Intricate needlework on borders and pallavs come alive in the rich Hastakala saris of East Bengal. Drape in old world charm in the Tangail Nakshi saris presented here in a new world style on geometric patterns and tie and dye backgrounds. Another traditional style that undergoes improvisation is the Balucher embossed cotton. The Butadar (with bootis, small round motifs) saris, a speciality of Bengal are in their traditional glory. All these styles are available as salwar kameez dress material too in the range of Rs. 700-1,400. In wash and wear fabric and reasonable prices the ensemble at Rang Mahal is refreshingly unique.
