MANE MATTERS

Dry or oily?

JAWED HABIB

Mixed condition hair requires special attention

Don’t be surprised if your hairdresser tells you your scalp is oily but hair is dry — what you have is mixed condition hair or combination hair.

Not knowing this, you either treat your dry hair and worsen the scalp or do the opposite and make your hair drier.

But, do not fret, there’s a way to treat it.

How to find it out

An oily face means an oily scalp that sometimes feels and seems dry, but it isn’t.

Remember, even if you have flaky dandruff, your scalp is really quite oily.

If the central part of the face and the forehead are oily and hair, dry, then it’s certainly a mixed condition.

If your hair roots (the first half-inch from the scalp) are oily and get drier towards the ends, it’s again a mixed condition.

Treatment

Wash hair with a mild anti-dandruff shampoo to clear scaling on the scalp and clogging of hair follicles. Anti-dandruff treatment and washing daily are essential for mixed condition hair.

To treat dry ends, apply a tiny amount of conditioner on them. This treats the required areas without making the entire shaft oily.

Rinse thoroughly after shampooing and conditioning. Or, the hair will attract and hold dirt, worsening scalp problems.

One can also apply a scalp astringent, after shampooing and before the final rinse.

Henna application only at the roots will help absorb extra oil on the scalp. Hair serum must be applied only at the ends of the hair to restore moisture.

In mixed condition, the hair and scalp are not in harmony.

You must control dandruff, modify oil lubrication of the glands, and counteract hair dryness.
