Choral treat

The Madras Musical Association presents its annual concert on April 3 and 4

It’s that time of the year when the Madras Musical Association comes up with its concert of western classical choral music, “Musical Montage 2009.” The 65-strong choir presents a veritable feast of music at the Hindustan Bible Institute on April 3 and 4.

For this concert, the MMA has chosen choral works by English composers.

John Rutter’s “Creation Alleluia”, David Wilcocks’ arrangement of the Shaker’s song, “Lord of the Dance” and Parry’s “I was glad” will be featured in the first half. Compositions by Purcell and Vaughan Williams are included.

Besides the choral works, a unique intstrumental combination will enchant the audience. V.S Narasimhan on the violin and Punya Srinivas on the veena will present Bach’s 2 violin concerto. Hummel’s piano Sonata in E flat by Edwin Roy and a trumpet-piano duo by David Rajan and Jayanthi Prabhakar promise to complement the instrumental section.

As for the second half of the programme, it will consist of delightful country music and spirituals. Two pieces from Handel will figure besides the rousing “Hallelujah Chorus” for the finale. Augustine Paul and Samuel Grubb will wield the baton while Edwin Roy will accompany the choir on the piano.

The concert is to raise funds for a school for the underprivileged the HBI wants to start in Kashmir shortly.

Donor tickets will be available at Musee Musical, ProMusicals, Shruthi Musicals and the Hindustan Bible Institute, Medawakkam High Road, Kellys.
