Best of the West

Gaultier, Ferretti, Lanvin and Moschino in Chennai? Yes, the luxury labels were featured at a trunk show recently

Showgirl gowns in hammered satin and uber chic dresses in wispy fabrics. Don’t-mess-with-me suits and playful tees. Quilted leather bags and sky-scraper shoes. You’ve seen them all while window shopping at famous fashion capitals in the W est. Or spotted cine stars sporting lovely Lanvin and gorgeous Gaultier. Or flipped through pages of fashion glossies that flash pictures of mannequin-like models displaying labels from Milan and Paris.

But now, thanks to New Delhi-based Kitsch (of TSG Marketing Pvt Ltd), high fashion from the West comes to India in a big way. At a trunk show organised recently by Kitsch and Evoluzione, Chennai-ites got a chance to see and feel the works of style biggies Jean Paul Gaultier, Lanvin, Alberta Ferretti and Moschino. Says TSG’s Charu Sachdev, the woman behind the show, “These days, people are aware of top brands from other parts of the world as well. So it’s important for us to showcase the labels — at least to the clientele that seriously seek them. Such trunk shows are done the world over. It’s an exclusive show for a limited number of people who get to see the latest clothes and accessories. We’ve organised similar shows in other metros and they proved to be sell-outs.

Though high-end brands spell glamour, Kitsch had to be careful while choosing clothes for the Chennai show. “People here are very well turned out. Their tastes veer more towards the classic than over-the-top. Big labels can mean anything from blatantly sexy to deliberately quirky. We made sure the clothes were not too revealing or uncomfortable while selecting the merchandise for the city,” smiles Charu, who launched Kitsch, an exclusive store for high-end Western labels in New Delhi recently. “Each designer has his/her own USP. And the prices are competitive — maybe a little more than some of our own celebrated labels,” she adds.

Clearly for le jet set, the five-figure plus collection showcased for two days at The Park comprised contour-clinging dresses and simple separates with subtle detailing. Finely finished suits and interestingly crafted cuffs and ties. As for the woman’s accessories — shoes and bags — they were all high on the glamour quotient.

Bursting with confidence, she continues, “We hope to make trunk shows a regular feature in the shopping calendar of important metros in the country. I plan to come back to show the Spring-Summer 2009 line.”

On a careful note however, Atul Malhotra of Evoluzione says, “It’s time to test the limits again in Chennai. Evoluzione has been bringing the best labels from across the country to the city. This trunk show serves as a test drive to examine the market for luxury Western brands. And I feel Chennai-ites are getting ready for them.”
