DOWN MEMORY LANE At the concert
A full house on a rainy evening. Well, it was Sujan Daniel and the Live Martini! And, Museum Theatre filled up with retro fans for a trip down memory lane. ‘Pocketful of memories – 2,’ the Happy Cat Sessions concert, began with the promise of Queen, Jim Morrison, Steely Dan, Little Richard, Steve Miller Band, CCR and more, and Sujan ensured that the nostalgia buffs got more than what they came in for.
Youthful energy
The first thing that strikes you about Sujan and the Live Martini (guitarists Tim Elliot and Bruce Lee, Gerard Joseph on the bass, Shayne Fernandez on the keyboard, and Elvin D’Costa on the drums) is how they enjoy performing and make it seem effortless, and their youthful energy. The informal, casual mood generated is perfect for you to put your feet up, sit back and tune in to the classics of yore. The band has an old-world charm to it, and it is somewhat impossible to believe that Sujan never lived in the sixties. He introduced every other song with a little trivia, calling in guest artists (Angeline D, Malaika Deniz, Megha Elizabeth and Barry D Rosario) to help him out with the duets. And, on this occasion, the band also had a guest drummer – Preetham Dev Moses.
Before the halfway break, the band had given the audience a taste of ‘Jealous Guy’ (a tribute to Jose Feliciano), ‘A Rockin Good Way’ (Shaken Stevens and Bonnie Tyler), ‘Against All Odds’ (Phil Collins) and ‘Rosanna’ (Toto). Both Timmy and Bruce Lee got their chance to show off what they could do with their fingers, and it wasn’t just a Sujan Daniel show. The crowd cheered both Elvin and Preetham during their turn at the drums, and Malaika, Megha and Angeline seized the opportunity to make their presence felt with ‘Waterloo’ (Abba).
Sujan’s Jim Morrison act (‘Light My Fire’) did bring the roof down, and the crowd joined him in singing. If you weren’t there, you also missed out on ‘The Joker’ (Steve MillerBand), ‘Baby I Love Your Way’ (Peter Frampton), ‘Lodi’ (CCR), ‘Old Time Rock n Roll’ (Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band), ‘Stupid Cupid’ (Connie Francis), ‘Proud Mary’ (CCR), ‘Fly Me to the Moon’ (Frank Sinatra). The Live Martini wrapped up with ‘Save The Last Dance’ (Michael Buble) leaving the crowd thirsting for more.
One more song, they screamed. The band returned on stage with the guest artistes — but only to take a bow.
